2024 Community Benefit Report

Community is not defined only by closeness; it is about care. It is about being connected and having responsbility for what happens to our family, our friends, and our neighbors."

Denise Burgess

As chair of the 2024 CAMC Foundation Board of Directors, I can attest to the generous spirit that permeates the citizenry of West Virginia. Working alongside my fellow board members, who are passionate and compassionate leaders, we endeavored to connect philanthropic resources with the experts at CAMC; to help provide clinical excellence, research, and education in the relentless pursuit of improving lives and creating a better tomorrow.

Together, you and many other community members help provide hope and cures by giving generously to support patients and families cared for at CAMC.

When I think about the future, I am excited and hopeful about how our partnerships will improve the lives of all of us cared for at CAMC. With your steady support, we can find new and innovative solutions to help every patient live their healthiest life.

We are proud to share our 2024 Community Benefit Report, which provides a snapshot of our activities in the community.

Sincerely,

DENISE BURGESS
2024 Chair
CAMC FOUNDATION
BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Together, we do more. Your donations are impactful. Your generosity creates resilience. Your benevolence supports life changing work, right here, close to home. Your philanthropic endeavors help shape the communities in which we live. Patients, families, friends, neighbors, and colleagues benefit from your collective offerings. Featured here are some examples of your impact.

Nursing Education

Nursing integrates the art and science of caring and focuses on the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and human functioning; prevention of illness and injury; facilitation of healing; and alleviation of suffering through compassionate presence.

Nursing is the diagnosis and treatment of human responses and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations in recognition of the connection of all humanity.

In short, caring is the essence of nursing.

Your support helps us allocate philanthropic dollars to support educational assistance for students pursuing a career in nursing or an allied health field (Licensed Practical Nurse, Imaging, Medical Technologist, Respiratory Therapists), along with current CAMC employee educational expenses, and continuing education for health care providers at CAMC. Partnerships in learning and nursing education, create benefits for our community; high quality health care, improved patient outcomes, population retention, and economic impact.

Radiant warmers provide the latest technology to our most vulnerable patients.

New state-of-the-art radiant warmers provide temperature management for newborn babies, particularly pre-term infants. Hypothermia is an independent variable for neonatal morbidity and mortality, with the evidence revealing that no other factor is as important in newborn survival than thermoregulation. Potential impact of infant thermal stress in the premature infant can lead to a number of life-threatening complications. Thanks to your support, these little babies facing big medical problems can be provided with critical temperature management, preventing low body temperature for low-birth-weight infants.

CAMC Neurodiagnostic

At CAMC Neurology, your gifts support the area's most trusted team of neurological specialists. CAMC Neurology is a regional leader in the diagnosis, care, and management of neurological disorders. The qualified team of experts provides comprehensive care and effective treatments for a wide range of neurological issues.

CAMC uses state-of-the-art technology to help physicians diagnose a wide range of disorders of the brain and nervous system.

Foundation funding supports services
that are designed for the neurophysiologist or electrodiagnostic technician who prioritizes quality, durability, and efficiency. Grant support provides support for a system that allows our neurophysiological team to
perform more specialized testing for more patients in our community with incredibly nuanced neurological issues. These funds secured equipment that will provide better diagnostics for our physicians to build upon with specific treatment plans in a much more efficient way.

CAMC Cancer Center

CAMC treats more patients with cancer than any other hospital in West Virginia. Your generosity helps care for all those warriors, survivors, and families who receive care at the CAMC Cancer Center. Because of you, no one cared for faces cancer alone. At CAMC, doctors, nurses, and a team of experts are dedicated to caring for cancer patients. Funds allocated support the CAMC approach to cancer care, where our patients are at the center of everything we do. Experience, expertise, and advanced
technology ensure that CAMC is well equipped to provide patients with a level of care you won’t find at other hospitals. Foundation grants provide access to the latest clinical trials for state-of-the-art cancer care opportunities and a team that works together so that care is coordinated
and convenient.

CAMC CARES Team

The CAMC CARES Team is at the heart of our Cancer Survivorship Program. Comprising dedicated professionals, their mission is to assess and address the various aspects of life affected by a cancer diagnosis for each patient. They provide personalized care that considers each patient's unique needs, including physical health, mental health, financial well-being, social support, dietary needs, family needs, and the complexities of treatment. This approach ensures patients are receiving tailored, quality care that is specific to their needs, thereby providing them with the safety and security they need during challenging times.

The Cancer Survivorship Program is a comprehensive initiative to provide psychosocial support, survivor education, and a physical activity program. It encompasses a range of activities, from the CAMC Cancer Center Fashion Show to the provision of psychosocial and exercise programs and staff training. The program also allocates resources for specialized education support on Cancer Survivorship at CAMC Cancer Center. Funding also provides for the development of quality eating programs for cancer anorexia, weight loss, cachexia, and other illnesses. These conditions often significantly impact the quality of life of cancer patients, presenting a multitude of physical, emotional, and social challenges. Your donations help address these issues and significantly improve patient outcomes and enhance survivors' quality of life.
